Paper abstract ~
Background/Purpose:
Sleep disorders and health-related quality of life (HRQL) are common in patients with hemodialysis. This study aims to explore the effect of high voltage current stimulation (HVGS) on blood chemistry, sleep quality and HRQL in hemodialysis patients.
method:
This is an experimental one-factor repeated measurement design. We recruited 19 patients from a large hemodialysis center. All patients received systemic FT-9000 HVGS for 20 minutes each time, 3 times a week, for 12 weeks. Efficacy assessment was performed at 1) before treatment, 2) at the end of 12 weeks of treatment (after treatment) and 3) week 12 after treatment completion, including basic hemocytometers and biochemistry, a concise health questionnaire (SF-36), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), as follow-up tests.
result:
A total of 12 patients (8 males and 4 females) completed a 24-week full study, with an average age of 55±12 years. After 12 weeks of HVGS treatment, the PSQI score improved significantly, but at follow-up, the PSQI score (17.25±1.14) had returned to pre-treatment levels. The results of the SF-36 health questionnaire showed that after HVGS treatment, the patients had significant improvements in physical function, physical pain, overall health status, vitality, and role limitation in emotional state (p<0.05). But in subsequent assessments, these scores returned to pre-treatment levels. Conclusion: HVGS may be an effective method to improve sleep quality and quality of life in patients with hemodialysis.
